What is plastic injection moulding?

Plastic injection moulding is a type of manufacturing process that is used to create consistent batches of the same product both fast and efficiently. It is commonly used in mass-production and prototyping and is one of the most reliable manufacturing techniques for the production of plastic products.

How does it work?

The plastic moulding process begins with the production of an aluminium or steel mould that is in the exact shape of the desired product that needs to be made. Once the original mould has been made, thermoplastic or thermosetting plastic is melted and then poured into the mould before being left to cool and therefore solidify. Once the plastic has set, it is then ejected from the injection moulders with the result being the fully formed product.

The advantages of plastic injection moulding

Plastic moulding is one of the most efficient ways to produce plastic products due to its fast process and large scale production capabilities, but at the same time maintaining a low-cost production rate. The process is extremely simple, with minimal labour costs and a fast turnaround on production. An extensive selection of materials can be used within plastic injection moulding and therefore means the process is an incredibly versatile one. Plastic moulding creates minimal scrap losses, and with low labour costs needed to create the batches of products, the process is highly economical.
