When it comes to shims washers, and all things small and automotive, you wouldn’t expect them to be the difference between a race won and lost – but you’d be very wrong. They’re even more important than that!
During this Formula One season, Stephens Gaskets’ shims and washers will not only help to win races, they’ll also keep the drivers safe.
For Formula One drivers, shims and washers are as important in the make up of racing cars as every other component of the engine.
As with all other aspects of car manufacturing and maintenance, here at Stephens Gaskets we are proud that Formula One racing cars are being supplied with our shims and washers.
Shims washers and staying in a straight line?
Most drivers will not be aware that these tiny components will take them the fast way round the track. For example, an alignment shim can make a huge difference to wheels that have become misaligned in most high tech, gadget-laden cars. Furthermore, our shims and washers will ensure racing drivers will be driving safely.
These shim washer parts are a key component in car engineering and are inserted between the wheel hub and the car axle. This helps to reduce the metal distortion that can sometimes occur, particularly when cars have been put through their paces, as with Formula One racing cars.
In essence a shim is often referred to as a spacer. Its primary use is to fill the small spaces between two engineered products. These shims come in all sizes and metals, including brass, steel, aluminium and copper. It’s also useful to remember that shims and washers can help to extend the lives of the surrounding components. They do this by preserving the surfaces of the engineered parts, so the only parts that need to be replaced from time to time are the shims and washers, not the expensive components.
Shims washers and other small automotive parts are so often an overlooked, but essential part of any engineered products and they contribute to the smooth running of any Formula One racing car.
